Understanding Fire Ratings: E vs EI



E Rating - Integrity Only

Fire & Smoke Barrier

What it does:

  • Prevents fire penetration (flames cannot pass through)
  • Blocks smoke and hot gases
  • Maintains structural integrity

What it DOES NOT do:

  • Does NOT prevent heat transfer
  • Glass surface on unexposed side becomes hot
  • Radiant heat can ignite nearby materials

Typical Applications:

Vision panels in fire doors, internal windows where heat insulation is not required, areas where visibility is prioritized over heat protection.



EI Rating - Integrity + Insulation

Complete Fire Protection

What it does:

  • Prevents fire penetration (flames cannot pass through)
  • Blocks smoke and hot gases
  • Maintains structural integrity
  • Limits heat transfer to unexposed side
  • Prevents radiant heat ignition
  • Keeps unexposed surface below critical temperature (≤140°C average)
Typical Applications:

Fire compartmentation walls, protected escape routes, stairwells, high-rise buildings, areas requiring full thermal protection.

Technical Standards & Testing

Time Rating: The number (30, 60, 90, 120) indicates the duration in minutes that the glass maintains its rated performance under standard fire test conditions.

Temperature Limits: For EI ratings, the unexposed face must not exceed 140°C average temperature rise (or 180°C at any single point) for the specified duration.

Testing Standards: All products tested to EN 1364-1 (European), BS 476-22 (British), and ISO 834 (International) standards under controlled furnace conditions.

Important: Building regulations may mandate EI-rated glazing in certain applications. Consult with fire safety engineers and local building control to determine appropriate ratings for your project. E-rated glass should never be used where insulation is required.
